Audience: Nonprofit Organizations (NPOs)
Redapt and Microsoft Elevate hosted a 4-hour workshop covering how Microsoft Fabric's data solutions can help nonprofits provide a comprehensive data architecture and analytics framework for their organization.
Navigating crucial data management considerations and data architecture options.
Centralizing your data ecosystem using OneLake, shortcuts, and optimized storage options.
Tailoring Microsoft Fabric capabilities for every role, from Data Engineers and Data Scientists to Data Citizens and Admins.
Planning for deployment by exploring capacity options and aligning the platform with your specific business objectives.
(8:16) Microsoft Fabric Overview
Chris introduced Fabric as a managed SaaS analytics platform intended to reduce infrastructure overhead and help organizations move toward faster, more advanced analytics.
(13:55) Data Architecture
The recommended starting point was a Medallion design: Bronze for raw source data, Silver for cleaned and standardized data, and Gold for curated, business-ready analytics.
(45:00 – 46:52, 3:22:09) Licensing and Capacity
Fabric requires an enabled Microsoft 365 tenant, appropriate Power BI licensing, and capacity. The presentation noted that free Power BI viewing requires F64 or higher, and recommended Microsoft’s sizing tool and capacity metrics app to help estimate and monitor usage.
(1:08:58, 1:30:50, 1:41:27) Storage and Ingestion
Fabric’s main storage options discussed were lakehouses, warehouses, and eventhouses. Data can be brought in through pipelines, dataflows, mirroring, or shortcuts; shortcuts access data in its original location, while mirroring replicates it into Fabric.
(2:21:39 – 3:03:02) Analytics and AI
The meeting demonstrated semantic models, Direct Lake, Power BI reports and apps, and Fabric data agents. Ontologies and example queries can provide agents with business terminology and guidance, but generated results still need review.
(3:03:55, 3:17:07) Governance and Administration
Chris covered workspace and item permissions, OneLake security, sensitivity labels, Purview, Git integration, and deployment pipelines. The recommended development pattern was to use separate development, test, and production workspaces, with changes reviewed and promoted between environments.
(3:27:52) Next Steps
Chris offered organizations a one-on-one pilot envisioning session to discuss current needs, candidate use cases, scope, success criteria, and capacity sizing.
