Audience: Nonprofit Organizations (NPOs)
Redapt and Microsoft Elevate hosted a 4-hour workshop covering designed specifically for Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) looking to modernize their SQL workloads. As end-of-support deadlines approach, Jacob Edelblute, CISSP, PMP guided NPOs how to build a secure, scalable Azure Landing Zone foundation and on-prem to cloud-native SQL migration paths.
Attendees participated in a deep dive into reference architectures, governance, and backup strategies, while also learning how to feed SQL data into modern analytics using Microsoft Fabric. NPOs left the workshop with a clear understanding of their migration options and a direct path to a partner-led assessment and deployment funding to accelerate their cloud journey.
(7:42) Azure Landing Zone
Jacob covered Azure’s hierarchy, identity, subscriptions, hub-and-spoke networking, and the Cloud Adoption Framework as foundations for planning a migration.
(58:34) SQL Migration Options
He compared rehosting SQL on Azure VMs, moving to Managed Instance or Azure SQL Database, modernizing applications, and keeping on-premises SQL managed with Azure Arc. The right path depends on compatibility, application needs, and migration effort.
(1:07:40) Migration Risks & Example
Legacy SQL features, performance and memory pressure, reporting workloads, and hidden dependencies can complicate migration. A sample nonprofit scenario used a three-node SQL Server 2022 Always On cluster, high-IOPS storage, and Azure File Sync.
(1:18:35) Microsoft Fabric
Fabric was presented as an option for consolidating data ingestion, engineering, warehousing, and analytics. The bronze–silver–gold approach prepares raw data for reporting and AI use.
(1:41:54) Governance, Security, and Cost
Jacob discussed Azure Policy, RBAC, tagging, Defender for Cloud, Key Vault, conditional access, and just-in-time privileged access as ways to manage security, compliance, and spending.
(2:01:02) Backup and Disaster Recovery
He distinguished backups for data recovery from Site Recovery for disaster recovery, emphasizing that RTO and RPO targets should reflect business needs and cost.
(2:07:20) Next steps and Funding
The suggested path was to clarify organizational goals and capacity, then consider an assessment, business case, pilot, or migration. Microsoft funding may help with assessments or migrations, but eligibility and amounts are not guaranteed.
